The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University offers a highly competitive Research Internship Program for outstanding students. This program is specifically designed for motivated individuals who want to gain hands-on research experience in a world-class laboratory and who are interested in potentially joining OIST’s PhD Program in the future.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the OIST Research Internship, you must meet one of the following academic criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in the last two years of a Bachelor’s degree (or will be by the start of the internship).

  • Currently enrolled in any year of a Master’s degree.

  • Recent graduates who have already completed their Bachelor's or Master's degree.

Additional Requirements:

  • Approval: Currently enrolled students must have formal approval from their home institution.

  • Academic Fit: Your academic background must align with your desired host research unit(s) at OIST.

  • Insurance (Japan-based applicants only): Interns belonging to a Japanese university must provide proof of Gakkensai and Gakkenbai (or equivalent insurance).

Please note: Current or graduated PhD students are not eligible for this internship and should explore OIST Workshops or Career portals instead.

Required Application Documents

All applications must be submitted online in English and uploaded as PDF files.

  1. Academic Transcripts & Diploma:

    • Scanned copies of your current/past grades (unofficial transcripts accepted).

    • Completed diplomas (if graduated) or a Certificate of Enrollment with your expected graduation date (if still studying).

    • English explanations are required for any transcripts not written in English.

  2. Statement of Purpose (Max 400 words / 2,500 characters): Must address your fit with OIST/host units, your goals during the internship, and how this fits into your career plans.

  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV): A standard CV summarizing your academic background, research experience, skills, and accomplishments.

  4. Recommendation Letters (1 to 3 letters): Must be submitted in English by professorial-level faculty who know your academic potential. (Letters from lab members or postdocs are not accepted).

  5. Passport / Government ID: A scan of your passport photo page. (If you do not have a passport yet, other government-issued ID is accepted).

  6. ID Photo: A recent passport-style front-facing photo taken within the last 3 months.

  7. English Proficiency Score (Optional): IELTS/TOEFL scores are not required, but can be uploaded to strengthen your application.
